Lovely hand-carved Chinese Bakelite set probably made in the 1930s. You'll note the charming One Bam (peacock standing on one leg) the One Dots with internal meanders, the Lovely frame White Dragon, and the Chinese character Red and Green Dragons. The maidens are a delight-note especially the three in the windows. Once a Chinese girl became older, her life was more or less confined to the Ladies' quarter of the house.
She'd spend her days looking out the window whenever she had free time. This set is in remarkable condition for its almost 90 years of age. It comes in a leather attache case (a bit dried out but the strap still manages to keep it closed) with four red rectangular trays to hold the tiles, and a thin tray holding the bakelite better, plastic coins used for bets, and two dice. There are a couple of little blemishes that you can see in the close-up photos of tiles, in the photo showing three tiles face-up and on their sides and backs. A special extra are the two sheets of typed scoring instructions for how the game was scored back in the days.. All tiles have been cleaned by hand. The photos show the tiles turned in place. Tiles all seem original to the set, and measure 35.47mm X 27.46mm X 18.72mm. They are all quite similar in their shading.
